August 14th, 2021 - Potenza (Italy)

A local fire was detected and characterized by the CNR-IMAA Atmospheric Observatory (CIAO) in Potenza, Southern Italy on  The local fire was an oak forest fire located only 1 km away from CIAO. The fire started at 16:00 UTC, August 14th, 2021 and was totally under control by the local fire brigade around 23:00 UTC. The extent of the burnt area and the locations of both the forest fire and CIAO can be seen in Figure 1. Data from the MSI (MultiSpectral Instrument) onboard the Copernicus Sentinel-2 were used to estimate the burnt scar. Aerosol lidar observations were key for characterizing the emitted plume.
